Montessori tip to use at home
Here is another Montessori tip for you!
One of the things I am always collecting is these little jam jars you sometimes get at cafes or hotels. They aren’t the regular size you get from the supermarket – they are only a few centimetres tall. This one was Bonne Maman jam, but there are other brands too.
These jars are manageable for kids from 2+ years to open by themselves. And they are very versatile, great for collecting small parts like beads etc. But in the classroom I use these most in the art and craft area.
1. As glue pots
I fill the small jar about ⅓ full with glue paste in the pot and provide a small glue brush. The glue I use is made from a powder and my box has lasted me over 5 years! I bought it at Knutsel Frutsel on the Hoofddorpplein and if you want to know what to look for you can find the product here.
2. For water colour painting
These are the perfect size for getting water for water colour painting. If the jar gets tipped over, there is not too much for the child to wipe up!
Hopefully you won’t get too many funny looks if you pop them in your bag after brunch at a cafe. And perhaps you have some great tips to share with us. Be sure to add yours on our Facebook page.
First aid tip for children
First aid tip – Febrile convulsions
Lately I have been hearing more often from parents that their child has had a febrile convulsion. It can be frightening if you have never experienced it before. So I asked our first aid trainer, Linda, to give us a brief overview and some first aid tips what you can do. Thank you Linda!
“Febrile convulsions occur when the infant or child’s temperature is high. Some children and infant’s brains are unable to regulate this and when they get an infection, usually throat or ear, the brain overheats and the child will fit. They may become flushed and sweaty with a very hot forehead, eyes may roll upwards, or eyes can be fixed and squinting, they may hold their breath and the face may look blue, they may become stiff with clenched fists and arched back.
What must you do
1. Keep child safe during the fit and monitor response and Airway Breathing and Circulation. Place soft padding around the child such as towels or pillows so that violent jerking won’t cause injury.
2. Undress child to help cool them down and make sure there is cool fresh air in the room, but be careful not to overcool.
3. Seizures stop when the child has cooled down. Check response Airway Breathing and Circulation. If responsive and breathing, seek immediate medical attention. If not responsive but breathing place in recovery position and call 112. If not breathing start CPR, rescue breaths and compressions and call 112 immediately.
Once a child has had a febrile convulsion, they will be prone to convulsions in the future. So try to keep temperature down if they get ill and discuss with your Doctor medication for seizures and infection.
If your child has a high fever above 37 degrees, keep cool with drinks, light bedding, paracetamol, fan room to keep air cool and a quiet environment.

Food bank collection
Inspired by this video, we are starting a collection for the Voedselbank Amsterdam (food bank). This organisation provides food packages to those in need.
We would like to challenge everyone to skip their next coffee (or beverage of choice) and instead take the kids to the shops to see how far your €3 will go. Your children will really benefit from helping you choose the items, and you are showing by example that we can help others.
Here are my purchases from today:
We will be running the collection until Friday 11 October. I contacted the Voedselbank and they suggested the following items:
Rice
Couscous
Spaghetti
Macaroni
Pasta sauce (vegetables)
Potato puree
Coffee
Tea
Bambix
Canned Vegetables or Fruit or Fish or Meat
Longlife milk
Sunflower oil
Olive oil
Rookworst
Please share this post with your friends. I would really like to collect over 200 items. Can you help?
